Fleet Safety Kick-off Meeting Held in Nairobi to Initiate Kenya Implementation Phase

thumb_fleetsafetybutton2The Fleet Forum launched the first implementation of its Fleet Safety Project in Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday 14 November 2007.  The Kenya Implementation phase of this global road safety project will train more than 1500 staff from 6 agencies - Oxfam, World Vision International, Goal, ADRA, UN World Food Programme and Care International.

Designed to create a culture of road safety and reduce road traffic accidents involving humanitarian organisations, all members of participating agencies will be given training through four modules including a general awareness briefing, management workshop, transport operation workshop and a professional drivers training.

According to recent studies by WHO, more than 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year, while 50 million more are injured or disabled.  Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people aged between 10 and 24 years.  At the same time, humanitarian staff cite road traffic accidents as one of the leading threats to their personal safety and their ability to deliver aid to beneficiaries.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 as the appropriate acknowledgement for victims of road traffic crashes and their families.  The launch of the Fleet Forum Fleet Safety Project corresponded with the 2007 commemoration of this day.

The Fleet Forum's Fleet Safety Project has been created in partnership with Make Roads Safe, TNT, Global Road Safety Partnership, Volvo, World Bank Road Safety Facility, UN Road Safety Collaboration, Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles, Kjaer Group, Shell and FIA Foundation, and has been primarily funded through DANIDA's Public-Private Partnership Programme.  In addition to producing comprehensive training material, an advocacy awareness briefing video on road safety has also been developed.
